Game is resource intense but what it does - just draws lots of textures on GPU.
It probably would not be able to do that in reasonably short time without GPU acceleration (not sure why Firefox even tries to do that and especially why it could freeze whole system). Browsers that lack GPU acceleration capability do try to draw everything using CPU which can be a complex task to do.
Reason why it could be freezing is CPU overheat and potentially flawed cooling. If I remember correctly, normally modern CPUs would throttle while old ones would instantly reboot if their temperature would go too high, though I do remember some CPUs simply freezing on overheat.
I believe same could happen with some other complex to process operations on your system, but usually it would only happen to specific user configurations rather than happening to everyone. I do also think that it can be best to avoid such applications and probably check if everything seems to be fine with your hardware and especially cooling.
