According to the Australian Museum, the Insecta class is full of exceptions, but they usually have the following features:
- A mouth with a pair of lower jaws, maxillae, and upper jaws, mandibles, designed to bite.
- A pair of antennae located on the head.
- A pair or two of wings.
- A segmented body with the head, thorax and abdomen.
- No internal skeleton but an external shell, the exoskeleton.
- No more than three pairs of legs, except for some immature forms such as caterpillars that have prolegs.
So as you can see, a certain blood color is not enough to classify them as insects. Nice find though!
