Another missile flies off into the distance but fails to connect once more - and the 203mm shells from both Takao and Tenryu do not fare much better, with every shell missing the Furutaka.

The Furutaka continues firing her forward guns at the angled Atago, but fails to score any hits. (12%)

Verlaine: "New contacts, north east! Displays updated - shells incoming!"

Six 310mm shells targeting Atago fly in from the northeast as a new fleet pops up on radar, but they all miss narrowly. (14%)

Travis: "Now that, looks more like a real fighting force."

Takao quickly identifies the targets - 4 Mogami-class heavy cruisers, 8 Yubari-class light cruisers, lead by a single B-64 Super Type A battlecruiser. The entire fleet has their bow facing towards the main fleet.

Verlaine: "Main aircraft squadron deployed - they will break from the main fleet and head directly northeast. I will inform you when they get close enough."

Travis: "Smoke deployed - we're coming back to rendezvous ASAP!"

The third missile fired at the same Furutaka yields no good results - it smashes into the water, creating another huge splash of water but no damage whatsoever. The hostile fleet turns and partially exposes an angled broadside, which Takao attempts to take advantage of with her 203mm guns. Unfortunately, her salvo meets the same fate as the missile - every shell only finds even more ocean.

The Furutaka, with a full broadside, finally fires her first full broadside of 6 203mm guns, scoring two hits on Atago's port side as the main fleet maneuvers to pull out southwards. From the other side, the main hostile fleet only shows their flagship - the battlecruiser - engaging Atago with her 310mm batteries. Similarly to the Furutaka, the main hostile fleet turns to show a full angled broadside, allowing the battlecruiser to engage with all 9 310mm guns at 14 miles. Two devastating 310mm shells find the starboard side of Atago's hull, but by some miracle she is able to hold on despite massive hull damage. Atago lists heavily, but doesn't flood nor catch any flames. (25/4157)

A flight of torpedo bombers take off and hold position directly over the airbase.

The Furutaka is re-engaged by another missile from Atago - although heavily stricken by hostile attacks, her missile barely connects with the Furutaka, sinking it outright.

The remaining two picket fleets and Takao herself - hauling Atago - engages the remaining two Yubaris with varying levels of success. Takao lands a single hit on one of the Yubaris with a single 203mm shell, while the americans find success with three 127mm hits on the other Yubari, damaging both hostile vessels but sinking neither.

Mutsuki sails northwards in an attempt to join up with Atago and Takao.

The hostile battlecruiser engages from a range of 14 miles, but the narrow profile of Atago barely allows her to evade every shot from the full broadside. The hostile Yubari-class light cruisers fire away at Atago as well, with better odds than the distant battlecruiser due to their superior angle and having a full broadside to fire at. Atago's luck runs out and is struck by 2 more 140mm shells - more than sufficient to sink the heavy cruiser.

Travis: "The heavy cruiser - she's going under! We better do something!"

An additional 4 aircraft - equipped with bombs - take-off from the airbase.

Verlaine: "68 aircraft airborne - won't be long now!

The aerial strike force will be in range within 2 minutes."

NDA hurriedly exits the turret. His eyes shift between the sinking Atago and the night sky.

My dear.. I'll finally see you again.. we'll be together again, in His majesty.

The engineer then glances towards the lifeboats.

Maybe it's not too late, but... these wouldn't even make it a mile without catching fire.. looks like amateurs made these pieces of shit.

..My options are pretty limited then.

The engineer hesitantly jumps off the deck and dives into the water, beginning to swim towards the towing Takao.

As the heavy cruiser sinks, Rose spots NDA diving into the sea.

"Mutsuki, go rescue NDA! Smoke when you get there."

Main fleet? Ha, it's just Takao now.

"No... Takao, picket fleet 1, picket fleet 2. Same targets, wipe the northwest cluster."

Mutsuki swings round, approaching the sinking wreckage of the second Takao-class heavy cruiser, Atago. The central portion of the long heavy cruiser gradually disintegrates as it disappears below the waterline, leaving only parts of the stern and bow visible as she goes under.

Following the quick pick up, Mutsuki immediately deploys smoke to mask her own position, and begins pulling back to the rendezvous point, joining up with Takao on the way, reforming the "main fleet".

The fleet engages both remaining Yubari-class light cruisers, with Takao and Tatsuta each scoring a hit on the first and Somer's landing a single hit on the second, sinking them both.

The distant battlecruiser targets Takao from 14 miles - despite the cover of Mutsuki's smoke, Takao's salvo has momentarily revealed her position to the enemy. Of the 9-shot 310mm salvo, a single shell strikes Takao directly on her stern.

Travis: "That's the small fleet all dealt with! Thanks for the help, boss - really got us out of the pinch there.

Francis gives her thanks."

4 more torpedo bombers take to the skies, reinforcing the air group holding over the airbase.

Verlaine: "Strike force in range - we should prepare for their attack runs."

The aircraft swiftly execute their aerial strikes - the torpedo bombers swoop in for the initial attack, but in the midst of heavy anti-air fire from the hostile Yubaris, four planes are lost to the depth of the oceans - two of each weapon type. Nonetheless, the torpedo bombers charge head first into the AA fire, deploying all of their 26 torpedoes against various targets, prioritizing the largest ones first.

The battlecruiser is sunk by the first wing of six torpedo bombers - although one torpedo strays and misses, the remaining five hit their marks and shreds one side of the hull apart, capsizing it instantly.

It takes another 12 torpedoes to sink the four Mogami-class heavy cruisers, and additional torpedo bomber attacks sink a Yubari and damage another severely. In total, 6 torpedo bombers miss, with the remaining 20 landing successful attacks.

With one damaged Yubari and six undamaged Yubaris remaining, the remaining bombers fly overhead in preparation for their bomb runs. 24 bombers unload their weapons, scoring 13 hits while the remaining 11 miss. This sinks every remaining hostile ship, leaving 6 bombers still loaded.

Travis: "We're in the clear!"

Verlaine: "Yes, we are. Finally."

Mutsuki: "He is, admiral. Nothing to worry about here!"

The ships continue sailing southwards to the rendezvous point, as another flight takes off from the airbase.

Have the re-armament begin after the currently landed planes have taken off. During the re-armament process, prioritize having re-armed planes take-off over grounding planes for re-arming. Verlaine: "That's going to take us slightly over half an hour to get all the planes prepped and ready... you sure about that? We saw what kind of reinforcements they could send within 15 minutes, nevermind 30.

Perhaps that was only the first response force from their nearby patrols and battlegroups - your call, though."

Takao: "Admiral, those recons are floatplane schematics - they aren't land-based aircraft. We would need to utilize a mounted seaplane catapult on one of our own ships to deploy them, and a crane-equipped vessel to retrieve them."

The fleets prepare to return to the docks in hopes of repair, with the fleet splitting off - Aratama offloads nanomaterials to Takao before heading towards the sinking wreck of Atago to quickly salvage her. The heavily damaged systems but large pieces of hull allow for Aratama to salvage 2675 KG of nanomaterials.

4 more G4M1 planes are rebuilt on the ground and await takeoff.

Have the airbase keep churning out torpedo bombers until we're done with repairs. Travis, please turn on the active radar."

"Takao, would we be able to build an airfield like this, back on Okinawa? How much would it cost, and how much for 2 runways? This place isn't ideal, for obvious reasons."

The entire fleet sails to the dock and quickly repairs all damaged ships, costing the fleet 1300 KG for all 4 damaged ships.

10 minutes pass, and Takao - the last ship to reach the docks - finally finishes her repairs.

Verlaine: "I've launched as many planes as we possibly could have... That's 116 bombers, though a significant portion are unfortunately unarmed at the moment."

Takao: "We'll have to go back and take a look. I haven't scanned the entire geography of Okinawa yet."
