I think that instead of just blue and black outlines, you should see the decal of your map. I can't tell you how many times I have spent making my first map, at getting the decals all mixed up. So maybe visuals can be changed.

Yes, that would help, but it wouldn't feel quite the same as the current level editor. This one is a bit like a blueprint, but interactive. It has that certain feel to it that only the Advanced Level Editor has, and while it can be a problem sometimes, it solidifies the architectural experience. Maybe show a blue/white/black version of the actual texture of your walls and backgrounds.

You would like to see the actual map in the Advanced Level Editor instead of playing the map to test it.

That can be a good idea.

Actually, I think he meant he wanted the graphics changed in the Level Editor, but that would be a good solution.
