Huge German WW2 pack.

Postby the red death » 15 October 2020, 15:29

So...
After many weeks of drawing , working on the presentation of guns & characters it's finally done !
This post includes pretty much all German manufactured WW2 firearms.
I didn't include odd , selfmade firearms (such as G43 rifles modified to fire the 7.92x33 round).
I Included some prototypes aswell , only these which I deem to fit into PB2.5 though.
And yes, I mean PB2.5 , not PB2.
This is due to the fact that PB2 is very limited & it has a poor rendering quality for custom decorations.
I'll write down some further information at the end of this post.

Categories... :

Pistols
Spoiler: Show More
Many pistols were used during WW2.
Not only pistols specially ordered by the military , the SA or SS , but also pistols which normally would end up on the civilian market.

Luger P08 :
Probably the most prominent pistol on this list.
The most produced version is chambered in 9x19mm , but there were a few exceptions to it , like an American export model in 45. ACP.
The unique reload mechanism makes it one of the easiest to recognize guns in the world.

Besides it normal configuration, the Luger also had a carbine configuration , consisting out of a rifle stock and a longer barrel.
Which leads us to the...

Long Luger :
As said before , basically a modified Luger.
Better accuracy , higher muzzle velocity and more comfort while shooting.

Mauser C96 :
An early semi automatic pistol design , predating WW1 & WW2.
By 1939 standards big , bulky and heavy , but still well liked by many SA and SS members.
Same as the Luger it has a pretty unique reload mechanism , most notably copied by Spanish weapon engineers.
Versions in 9x19mm , 7.65x21mm and 7.63x25mm (and later in 9x25mm Mauser "Largo") have been produced.

Same as the Luger it has a carbine modification ...

Mauser C96 Carbine :
Same as with the long Luger : Increased muzzle velocity, more accurate and way more comfortable while shooting.

Walther P38. :
Even before Germany went to war , they felt the need to replace the Luger P08 as ordnance weapon , because it simply was way too time & cost intensive to manufacture it on a large scale.
This is where the Walther P38. appreared.
9x19mm & the first german ordonance pistol with a slide !

Walther PP & PPk :
Small caliber carry guns, very popular due to their high quality.
Most commonly available in 380. ACP (9x17mm also known as 9mm short) but also some smaller , like 32. ACP (7.65x17mm).
Main difference between the PP and PPk are the size.
It's hard to spot the differences , but I hope it's clear :

Walther PP

Walther PPk

And here we see a Walther PP in action...

Mauser HSc :
When the Mauser company took note of the success & popularity of the Walther PP and PPk's , they tried to come up with a gun fitting into the role as well as the Walther counterparts do.
This lead to the Mauser HSc.
Operation was the same as the PP, it just looked a bit smoother.
It wasn't as popular as the PP until bad person Party leaders discovered it & ordered a large amount of them as "party pistol" with an engraved swastika on the grip.

Sauer 38H :
Shiny, isn't it?
Same as other companies , Sauer & Sohn tried to construct an ordonance weapon for the 3rd Reich , but the Sauer 38H lacked of firepower, since it was only chambered in 32. ACP , which was underpowered even back in 1938.
Although it failed test trials to become the ordonance weapon, it was well liked by members of the SA & SS and during war, many tank crew members carried them , since they are light, small & easy to carry arround.

Submachine Guns
Spoiler: Show More
Submachine guns played a huge role during WW2 , since assault &/or battle rifles weren't a popular and well known concept back then.
The first assault rifle called Awtomat Fjodorowa , designed by Russian engineer Wladimir Fjodorow , was introduced in 1916 but it was deemed way too unreliable , so most nations lost interest in the concept which lead to a golden era of submachine guns.

Bergmann MP28 :
Theodor Bergmann , the father of the submachine gun , improved on his earlier MP18 design.
The MP28 finally had a working safety & a fire selector switch.
It was rejected by the Wehrmacht, since by 1939 designs like the MP38 (which lead to the MP40) were way more ergonomic & comfortable to carry.
Although it's rejection by the Wehrmacht, the MP28 remained in service until the end of war , mostly used by police units and SS & SA members.
As most German submachine guns during this era , it was chambered in 9x19mm.

MP35 :
A quite weird submachine gun with a ... bolt handle ?
Yes !
The MP35 was constructed as a weapon to train recruits & show them how to operate a bolt action firearm , preparing them to shoot the K98k.
Why was this weird techniqe chosen & why is the magazine on the right side ?
Basically the 3rd Reich hadn't produced as many K98k's in 1932 (Yes, the name of the gun is MP35, but manufacturing started in 1932. It's quite weird...) , besides that the magazine was on the right side to make it easier for the operator to reload the gun.
You operate the bolt with your right hand ?
Then it should be easy to stick a magazine into the gun with your right hand aswell !
Chambered in 9x19mm , 7.65x21 , 7.63 x 25 and 9x25 there was even a version in 45. ACP.
It was most commonly seen to be carried by SA members.

Erma EMP :
A mean looking submachine gun with a beautiful wodden body.
Most commonly used by SA and SS members & well liked.
Chambered in 9x19mm , 7.65x21 , 7.63 x 25 and 9x25 & with a quite long barrel it was a deadly accurate submachine gun.

MP40 :
The ordonance submachine gun of the Wehrmacht.
A crowd favourite & often called one , if not the best submachine gun of WW2.
Chambered in 9x19mm , equipped with a long barrel & an underfolding stock and with a fire rate of 600 rounds per minute the MP40 could deliver a deadly accurate hail of bullets.

MP41 :
You thought it's just a MP40 with wodden body ?
Guess what ?
You are wrong !
Yes , the MP41 uses MP40 components but the internals belong to a ... MP 28 !
The MP41 was a try to combine leftover MP28 components with modern MP40 parts, just to recycle them.

Bolt Action Rifles
Spoiler: Show More
Although machine & submachine guns were very popular at that time , bolt action rifles still were the backbone of pretty much any army in the world.
Most commonly 5 shots capacity , firing large rounds , kicking like a mule everytime you pull the trigger.

Mauser Karabiner 98 kurz :
The backbone of the German army up until 1945.
It's a shortened version of the Gewehr 98 (which introduced the system 98).
Regarded as the most reliable bolt action rifle of WW2 , even most modern bolt action rifles (Such as the AWM-S , better known as AWP) use a variant of the system 98.
As bolt action rifles at that time , it was fed using 5 round loading clips.
Firing the 7.92x57IS cartridge, it was an effective long range weapon with excellent accuracy.

VG-1 :
At the end of the war , things needed to change ...
Germany couldn't really wait for K98k's to be produced , so they went on a journey to simplify the system to produce a very cheap rifle.
Outcome of those efforts was the Volkssturmgewehr 1 , using a simplified version of system 98.
Other than the original K98k it used 10 round box magazines.
Same as the K98k it fired the 7.92x57IS cartridge.

Spreewerk VG-2 :
Same as the VG-1 , the VG-2 was meant to be a cheap to produce firearm for the Volkssturm (German paramilitary organisation , consisting out of normal civilians).
Other than the VG-1 it's still a quite nice gun & it's quality isn't as bad as most people might think.
Same as the and VG-1 it fires 7.92x57IS cartridge & is fed from a 10 round box magazine.

Semi Automatic Rifles
Spoiler: Show More
Same as most other countries , Germany finally realised that it needs a semi-automatic ordonance rifles, like the soviet SWT-40 or the American M1 Garand , simply because the fire volume was much bigger than the of a traditional bolt action rifle.

G41 :
A firearm the Germans really don't like to mention , since it's regarded as one of the worst firearms of WW2.
The G41 had a very complicated gas system , was unreliable and needed intensive maintenance to work.
Only 100000 were produced and they were genuinely disliked by the majority of soldiers.
As most German firearms at that time , it fired the 7.92x57IS cartridge.

G43 :
Same as the G41 this rifle was introduced to replace the K98k , which it never really did , but with a total of 450000 produced guns it was way more common than the G41.
Other than the G41 the G43 was reliable (the Germans learned from the mistakes made with the G41 & took more inspiration from the Russian SWT-40).
Today it's a controversial gun.
Some people say it's bad, unreliable , has a big muzzle flash etc. while others say the exact opposite.
WW2 veterans liked it , but prefered the K98k for precision shooting.
Same as the G41 it's another gun chambered in 7.92x57IS but other than the G41 it could be fed with clips or a detachable 10 round box magazine.

VG 1-5 :
At the end of the war the Germans experimented with guns chambered in 7.92x33 (known as 8mm short, developed for the StG44).
It's a selfloading rifle but it operates more like a giant blowback pistol.
Although it may look very primitive it's actually pretty complexe , featuring 67 moving parts and bits ... keep in mind , they wanted a "simple" gun at the end of the war ...

Self loading & Assault Rifles
Spoiler: Show More
At some point Germany figured out that there needs to be something to fill the gap between semi-automatic and bolt action rifles and submachine guns.
First off the guns were still developed arround the 7.92x57IS cartridge , but later on the interests swifted to the 7.92x33mm cartidge , the first successful intermediate cartridge in the world.

FG42 :
After the desastrous battles on Crete it was clear that the paratroopers needed a rifle which they could jump out of the plane with & land with without hurting themselves.
So the FG42 programm was born.
It was a rare firearm due to it's complexity & high manufacturing cost , but most commonly seen in it's second generation variant.
Although firing the 7.92x57IS cartridge (fed from a 20 round box magazine from the left side) it remained very controllable & accurate , which made it a fit for both long and short range combat.

StG44 :
The grandfather of modern assault rifles ...
30 round detachable magazine , a fire rate of 600 rounds per minute and effective mid and close range combat capabilities made possible by using the 7.92x33mm intermediate cartridge.
Around a million of them were produced & they still pop up in the middle east during conflicts.
The StG44 arguably marks one of the most important steps in firearm history & shaped the name for a new category of firearms.

StG45 :
At the end of the war , the Mauser company looked over the StG44 and tried to simplify it ... with success.
The StG45 was born but ... it didn't really see action.
Only around 30 guns were assembled.
This was mainly due to the fact that the StG45 just cut down production cost by around 10% and StG44 assembly plants were already built.
Same as the StG44 it used 30 round detachable magazines & it was chambered in 7.92x33mm.
Why did I include it in here ?
I think it's worth mentioning since it massively shaped the post-war rifle generation and was the starting point of the G3 developement.

Machine Guns
Spoiler: Show More
Machine gun developement between the wars was extremely fast.
In just around 20 years the machine guns evolved from bulky & heavy beasts with water cooled barrels to modern looking , air cooled designs weighing around 9-12 kilogramms.
Many design details from this era are still an important part of modern machine gun designs.

MG34 :
With the MG34 Germany adopted a universal machine gun.
Chambered in 7.92x57IS and firing at an astonishing rate of 900-1100 rounds per minute it was effective against soldiers and early aircraft
It was meant to be replaced during war in an effort to save money , but it never really was discontinued since it fit way better being mounted into vehicles than other machine guns.

MG42 :
Since the MG34 was a quite complexe gun and definitely not the cheapest , German engineer Werner Gruner came up with the design for the MG42.
Cheap to manufacture due to many parts being stamped from metal & with a firerate of incredible 1200-1500 rounds per minute incredibly effective against pretty much anything unarmored.
A modified variant of the MG42 , the MG3 is still in use today , main difference being the switch from the 7.92x57IS cartridge to 7.62x51.

MG15 :
At the end of the war it looked bleak for the Germans.
Since many MG34 and MG42 factories have been bombed to ashes they decided to use left over MG15 guns , which are normally mounted on planes.
They added a bipod and a buttstock and hoped for the best when issuing those guns to the Wehrmacht and the Volkssturm.

Anti Tank & Anti Material Guns
Spoiler: Show More
Tanks were feared since WW1 so the Germans introduced anti tank rifles even before the war started , but after the first couple of months it looked like most enemy tanks are immune to those kind of rifles , so they stepped up and created way more effective armor penetrating weapons ...

Panzerbüchse 39 :
The basic anti tank rifle at the beginning of the war.
Firing the extremely odd looking 7.92x94mm cartridge it was an effective weapon against light armored vehicles , but not much more.
Later variants featured a grenade cup to launch a 30mm grenade , which increased it's effectivity drastically.

Faustpatrone 30 :
The predecessor of the better known Panzerfaust.
A small shaped charge being launched at the enemy , able to penetrate up to 140mm of armor.
It kinda failed because the odd shape of the charge lead to it usually bouncing off angled tank armor...

Panzerfaust 30 , 60 and 100 :
The Panzerfaust - easy to use , cheap to manufacture , disposable and effective.
Up to 200mm tank armor could be penetrated with it , which made it a feared weapon among enemy tank & vehicle drivers.

Panzerschreck / Raketenbüchse 54 :
A simple construction :
Pipe, trigger , fuse and and and- ... well not that simple.
But basically the Panzerschreck was an a 164cm long pipe with a diameter of 88mm.
It used the modified ammunition of the Raketenwerfer 43 "Püppchen".
Due to the immense back blast of the rocket the Germans attached a shield to it to protect the user.

Flamethrowers
Spoiler: Show More
With the experience from WW1 the Germans manufactured quite effective flamethrowers during WW2.
There isn't much to say about flamethrowers since their use is pretty self explanatory.

Flammenwerfer 35 :
The flamethrower Germany entered war with.
Capable of carrying arround 12l of flammable oil & launching it as far as 30 meters it was way more effective than it's WW1 predecessors , but with a weight of 35kg it still was painful & exhausting to carry while limiting the movement of it's user.

Flammenwerfer 41 :
Lighter than the Flammenwerfer 35 and only capable of carrying 7.5l of flammable oil , but still able to launch it up to 30 meters far.

Einstossflammenwerfer 46 :
A light , disposable flamethrower that was meant to be used by the Volksturm.
While being able to only hold 2l of flammable oil , it still proved to be an effective weapon by the end of the war , bringing many Soviet and American lifes to a painful end.

Throwable Weapons
Spoiler: Show More
This seems to be an odd category to include and to be honest , it really is...

Eihandgranate 39 :
Germany's most produced grenade during WW2 , even more often produced than all stick grenades together.
Light , easy to carry and pretty safe , sadly it's a bit underpowered.
There were 2 versions :

1. Blue cap version , the normal Eihandgranate 39 with 4-5 seconds delay.
2. Red cap version , made up for traps with only 1 second of delay.

Stielhandgranate 24 , 39 and 42 :
Better known as the Eihandgranate & more often recognized by it's distinctive shape.
It sacrificed a bit of power & comfort to carry for the ability to be thrown way further than other grenades.

Panzerwurfmine :
A shaped charge , same as the Panzerfaust ... but with the difference that this one needs to be thrown.
A very unpopular weapon although it's effectiveness if used correctly , simply due to the fact that it tended to slide & bounce of angled tank armor.

Attachments & Ammunition
Spoiler: Show More
As the name of this category tells , just a little look over some attachments & their use and a picture of the cartridges used during WW2 in the here presented guns.

Attachments :

1. Zeiss ZF.41 : A standard scope with 1.5x magnification.
2. Rifle stocks : Can be attached to pistols to make shooting & aiming more comfortable
3. MG15 Drum : The only way to feed a ground version MG15
4. MG34 and MG42 Drum : Interchangeable , can store up to 75 rounds.
5. Seitengewehr / Bajonett 42 : The standard bayonet of the Wehrmacht.
6. Granatgerät 98 + Rifle Grenade : Grenade launching device that could be attached to most German firearms.
7. Krummlauf : Bent barrels to shoot arround corners and over covers without exposing the soldier.
8. Panzerbr. Munitionsbehälter : Used to store up to 10 rounds of 7.92x94mm AP or blank ammunition.

Shown & Mentioned Characters
Spoiler: Show More
Wehrmachtssoldat :
The average foot soldier of the 3rd Reich.
By the end of 1943 they received new , way cheaper manufactured uniforms.

1939-1943

1944-1945

During the try to take over North Africa by the Afrika Korps (1941-1943) the Wehrmacht wore yellow-brown painted uniforms like those :

Tank & Self propelled artillery crew :
The name is pretty self explanatory.
The self propelled artillery was colored green because they were way more likely to operate outside of their vehicle.

Sturmabteilung [SA] :
The bad person parties first paramilitary organisation.
It used to be the most important , but it fell out of Hitlers favor after he was sure that Ernst Röhm ( SA-Leader ) tried to kill him.

Schutzstaffel [SS] :
The bad person parties second paramilitary organisation.
The SS was a group of devoted , highly ideologically indoctrinated nationalsocialists ready to die for Hitler whenever they needed to.
They are responsible for some of the most cruel war crimes in human history & guarded the concentration camps.

Besides their black uniform ( which wasn't worn in combat ) they were the first ones to use true camouflage uniforms called "Flecktarn".
Example :

Just answering some questions that may come up & coming to an end ...
Spoiler: Show More
Q : Why did you only use 3-5 colors for all the guns ?
A : I decided for it so I didn't need to search up the perfect color combination for every new gun I draw.

Q : Are the guns you drew gonna be available in other colors aswell ?
A : Yes , repainting most of the guns is a pretty easy task so I will probably do it.

Q : Are you going to edit the guns you already drew ?
A : Depends on PB2.5s artstyle. I may add more gradients to the wodden & metal parts to the guns.

Q : Are these all guns you want to draw for the Germans & is this pack complete ?
A : No , I will probably add more guns , attachments & more to this pack if I feel the desire to do so.

Q : Why did you draw your guns so complex ?
A : Because I have the hope that Eric may include support for custom reload & shooting animations.

Q : Where did you get your Informations about those guns from ?
A : Mostly from Wikipedia & the Forgotten Weapons youtube channel & Site.

Links :
[ Forgotten Weapons Youtube channel ] : https://www.youtube.com/user/ForgottenWeapons
[ Forgotten Weapons Website ] : https://www.forgottenweapons.com/

Q : Why WW2 ?
A : Because I'm simply interested in it.

Q : Are you going to draw anything else not WW2 Germany related ?
A : Yes , in fact I planned to draw all Soviet firearms next.

Q : Is there going to be anything else than WW2 content ?
A : Yes , if I feel like it I may draw something else , stay tuned !

Q : Why did you draw all those firearms for PB2.5 ?
A : As I said in the introduction , PB2's rendering quality of custom images is very poor & I'm not very interested in PB2 anymore.

Q : Which software did you use ?
A : Inkscape , a free vector graphics software.

Here a download link if you want to try it out yourself :
https://inkscape.org/
If you start a new project , I recommend saving it very frequently ( like every 1 - 2 minutes ) since Inkscape sadly tends to crash since version 1.0.

At the end I really would like to thank anyone who helped me to find ideas which guns I should draw.
This includes searching up guns , coming up with good ideas , providing me with constructive criticism , telling me their opinions etc. or simply told the that I really should reconsider my drawing decision on certain guns.

This is actually cool. I don't know why red death is awarded for such talents he dedicates himself to create amazing weapons that is based off from real weapons from WWII. I think eric should add these weapons into the game. And I believe red death should be PB2 co developer. Amazing work red! :^)

Absolutely glorious. I saw WW2 weapons were already added in some maps but low dimensions skew their appearance. I presume you were the artist for the models or decided to do justice to them.

Anyway, glad to see people are still interested in the game.

The amounts of dedication made for this post and pack is just insane, weeks of drawing, 27 kb worth of text on this post alone, 2 hours of typing. Not to mention the image folder has 105 images in total and this guy even asked for more weapons if he missed any before posting. And for the weapons themselves, they are just magnificent, perfect for 2.5 rendering. Would wait for 2.5 just for this
Trust me, I see no enjoyment in that.
